The Power of Words

“There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.” (Proverbs 12:18, KJV)

“Some people make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise bring healing.” (Proverbs 12:18, NLT)

“But on the other hand, the tongue of the wise, which is in itself pure gentleness and a comfort to others, since, far from wounding, rather, by means of comforting, supporting, directing, exhortation, exercises a soothing and calming influence. …” (Keil and Delitzsch Commentary on Proverbs 12:18)

Certain words in the original language speak of “stilling, softening, soothing, whence arises the meaning of healing … the meaning to repair, to mend …” (Keil and Delitzsch)

Other words mean “equally to still and to heal.” (Keil and Delitzsch)
